Russia and Syria sign
major weapons deal --Jan. 28, 2005
Russian president Vladimir Putin and Syrian president
Bashar Assad signed a military cooperation agreement that enables
Russia to upgrade Syria's military and sell Damascus advanced
arms. Among the first weapons transferred is the sale of an
advanced antiaircraft missile system mounted on armored personnel
carriers, according to sources. The system is highly effective
against low-flying aircraft and cruise missiles, and the mobility
offered by the carriers renders the new missiles difficult to
detect prior to launch. A deal in the works may also provide
Syria with advanced surface missiles capable of engaging multiple
targets at once.

Triumf - Growler air defense missile system stationed around
Moscow -- July 25, 2007
Russia will deploy the first air defense
battalion equipped with new S-400 missile systems around
Moscow on August 6, an Air Force spokesman said.
The S-400 Triumf (NATO codename SA-21 Growler) is a new air
defense missile system developed by the Almaz Central Design
Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300 family.
A regular S-400 battalion comprises at least
eight launchers and 32 missiles and a mobile command post,
according to various sources.
S-400 has been designed to intercept and
destroy airborne targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers
(250 miles), or twice the range of the U.S. MIM-104
Patriot, and 2.5 times that of the S-300PMU-2.
The system is reportedly highly
capable of destroying stealth aircraft, cruise missiles, and
ballistic missiles with an effective range of up to 3,500
kilometers (2,200 miles), and a speed of up to 4.8 kilometers (3
miles) per second

Only Mobile Air defense -- April 2007
The general said the decision [to deploy only
mobile systems] will allow Russia to increase the
"survivability" of military personnel and weaponry and
to quickly create large air defense formations in areas that need
urgent protection from air strikes
The general said that the Air Force has recently
been procuring S-400 Triumf, S-300 PMU2 Favorit (NATO codename
SA-10 Grumble) and Pantsyr S1 mobile air defense systems, which
are capable of destroying any aircraft, ballistic or cruise
missiles, or guided bombs
Russia has also signed Pantsyr S1 sales contracts
with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan, and Syria, and is
currently in talks with Algeria on the deliveries of this highly
sought-after weapons system.

Russian impervious missile : Bulava --March 2, 2005
Ivanov
suggested the weapons would be based on the mobile version of the
Russian Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missiles and on a new sea-based
system, the
Bulava,
according to Interfax news agency.
"There
is not and will not be any defense against these missiles," he said, according to
Interfax.
The
Topol-M can hit targets more than 6,000 miles away, and has been in silos since 1998,
with about 40 on duty now,
according to military officials. Military officials have said
they plan to begin deploying the mobile version this year.

More on the Bulava missile
; ( placed on Borei class subs ) -- July 12, 2007
Part One :
" Putin took the unusual step of publicly hailing the June
28 test. it also gave him a power boost right before his
most recent summit with U.S. President George W. Bush at
Keenebunkport, Maine. "
the successful Bulava test gives Putin the assurance that his
efforts to rebuild Russia's formidable strategic nuclear forces
into a state-of-the-art arsenal for the coming decades are back
on course.
The R-30 Bulava, or SS-NX-30, intercontinental ballistic missile is a version of the
land-based Topol-M ICBM that is cut down in length in order to
fit into a submarine missile firing tube.
12 MIRV-ed Bulkavas, the rest are designed to carry 16 each. That
would give each one of them the
capability to destroy up to 192 cities"
http://www.upi.com/Security_Terrorism/Analysis/2007/07/12/bmd_focus_bulava_breakthrough__part_1/3281/
Ed: My math configures 188 cities total .... based on 12 + 176 =
188 cities. ( almost 4 main cities per state )
Part Two :
" The Bulava still has a long way to go before it has been
operationally tested a sufficient number of times for it to be
produced in significant numbers and deployed on the new Borey 955 class nuclear strike submarines
that have been designed to carry it. The first of the class, the
Yury Dolgoruky, is designed to carry 12 Bulavas with 12 Multiple
Independently targeted re-entry vehicles
( Ed: 144 missiles ) , or MIRV-ed, warheads each. ....
The remaining 11 Boreys will carry as many as
16 Bulavas each. ( Ed: 176 missiles )
The final and most fundamental factor of the successful Bulava
test, therefore, is that Russian power,
and the awesome Russian strategic nuclear deterrent, is going to be around for a long time to come.
As they wrestle with other threats and challenges around the
world, U.S. policymakers should never forget that.

Mobile

The Russian Strategic Missile Force has received over 40 Topol silo-based ICBMs
since 1997. However, unlike these earlier missiles, the mobile, hard-to-detect
and interchangeable Topol-M ballistic missiles, which are immune to electromagnetic impulses,
can be launched from a wide area
Moreover, the Topol-M can breach
any existing anti-ballistic missile shield,
including the highly expensive U.S. National Missile Defense
system.

the missiles 2,000 miles to reach the Continental U.S. and then
they will still have a 3,000 mile range (the breadth of the U.S

Americans are at risk of a nuclear shower at any time, without
warning.

Bulava's undeterminable "Igla" warheads
The Topol M and Bulava ( SS NX 30 ) missiles employ a
maneuvering warhead called the Igla. This warhead
was first tested in February 2004 with an older version of Topol.
The trajectory of Igla is not just difficult but, in fact,
impossible to predict because the warhead
has auxiliary engines that switch on and off randomly.
The targeting system of the warhead keeps track of changes in the
trajectory on account of these random engine firings and
eventually guides the warhead toward its target.
The Igla will reportedly also use IR [ infrared ] counter
measures and decoys to confuse any Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicles
(Interceptors) that may target it during that phase. It may be
noted that the interceptors planned to be deployed as part of the
US GMD (Ground Based Midcourse Defense) are equipped with
on-board discrimination to identify the true warhead from among
decoys and associated objects.

Russia test-fires mobile ICBM -- Christmas Day 2004 ... Dec. 25
Russian media reports have said the missile lifts
off faster than its predecessors and maneuvers in a way that
makes it more difficult to spot and intercept. It is also
reportedly capable of blasting off even after a nuclear explosion
close to its silo.
"The missile can penetrate all invented
and even yet to be invented missile systems, including those
equipped with space-based elements, with high probability,"
said Yuri Solomonov, who heads the Moscow Institute of Thermal
Systems which designed and manufactured the missile.
The deployed Topol-Ms have been fitted with single
nuclear warheads, but officials have mentioned plans to equip
each missile with three
individually targeted warheads.
President Vladimir Putin has said Russia is developing new
strategic nuclear weapons excelling anything which other nations
have. Military analysts have said the new weapon would likely be
based on the Topol-M.

third of the way around the planet to the warhead target range in
the Pacific, and as the bombers followed their
dreaded Arctic route to fire cruise missiles over the top of the
earth, the reality of the massive exercise
was clear: The threat of Cold War nuclear
extermination is as real as ever.
Putin has placed former KGB officers in
nearly 60 percent of all presidential administration posts"
20 vertical missile tubes on nuclear
subs:
Arkhangelsk and Novomoskovsk
"another Delta-IV sub, the Karelia, launched
a missile the next day. The SS-N-23, which the Russians call Sineva,
shattered out through the surface,"
"The Russian president witnessed the
flawless launch of a Kosmos-2405 spy satellite
aboard a Molnia-M rocket as part of the nuclear-war exercise.
Talking to reporters at Plesetsk, Putin announced a bold
initiative to modernize the Strategic Rocket Forces with
next-generation weapons and, according to United
Press International and Russian press accounts, said he might
authorize an upgrade of the nation's Soviet-era
missile-defense system.
The former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan, in
Central Asia, provided a platform for Moscow to launch two more
ICBMs: an SS-19 and the brand-new SS-27 Topol-M, the
latter aboard a mobile launcher.
At least 14 strategic bombers
fanned out to the west, north and south with supersonic Tu-160
Blackjack bombers heading toward the North Atlantic and
old but dependable Tu-95 Bear bombers,
the old Soviet Union's answer to the American B-52, firing
cruise missiles at an Arctic target on Novaya Zemlya
island, according to Nikolai Sokov of the Center for
Nonproliferation Studies.

Russian military exercises --Feb 10, 2004
The exercise, which began in late January on the
headquarters level, will later involve the launch of an
unspecified number of sea- and ground-based ballistic missiles
and flights by strategic bombers, said Col.-Gen. Yuri Baluyevsky,
the first deputy chief of the General Staff of the Russian armed
forces.
He dismissed media reports that strategic bombers would test-fire
missiles over the north Atlantic but refused to comment on their
flight routes.
He dismissed media
allegations that the planned exercise would closely resemble
Soviet-era simulations of an all-out nuclear
war with the United States, saying that it's
not directed against
any specific country.

A S-300 surface-to-air missile system is regarded
as the calling card of Russian air defense. It is designed to
protect military units, strategic military targets and civilian
targets from ballistic and cruise missiles, unmanned aircraft and
air strikes. It can hit targets at a distance of 7-100km, at a
height of 25-30km, and flying at a speed of 300 meters per

Didn't GHW Bush ( 41 )
and Clinton give away our Alaskan islands to Russia, without
Congressional approval ? Yes.
Alaskan Island Giveaway-- David Bresnahan
The Senate ratified the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Maritime
Boundary Treaty in 1991,
which was then signed by
President George [ Herbert ] Bush.
The Alaska House and Senate were never consulted during the
treaty's negotiations,
Think about this," said Olson. "If you
had just one island with only one square mile and you drew
a 200 mile circle around it, do you know that's 125,000 square
miles of potential sea bottom for oil exploration?
"It's totally anti-public, anti-Congress, anti-state actions
-- but unfortunately the State Department thinks it has the power
to adopt this boundary line with the Russians without
anybody's consent outside themselves," he said.
Alaska
H.J.R. 27, ..gives away 8 Alaskan Islands
The United States-U.S.S.R. Maritime Boundary moved the line
between Russia and Alaska in such a way that eight islands that
were specified as part of Alaska when it was purchased from
Russia would become part of Russia once again.
The State of Alaska was not included in the negotiations at the
time of the agreement, or at any time since, complains Coghill.
The agreement transfers to Russia the islands of Wrangell,
Herald, Bennett, Henrietta, and Jeannette Islands in the Arctic,
and Copper Island, Sea Lion Rock, and Sea Otter Rock on the west
end of the Aleutian chain.
The U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 and the
sale included all Aleutian Islands, including Copper, Sea
Otter Rock, and Sea Lion Rock. In 1881,
U.S. Capt. Calvin L. Hooper landed on Wrangell Island and claimed
it for the U.S. Also in 1881, the U.S. Navy claimed the islands
of Bennett, Jeannette, and Henrietta. The British held Herald
Island, but they gave up that claim permitting the U.S. to take
it.
On June 1, 1990, then-Secretary of
State James Baker signed a secret executive
agreement with Eduard Shevardnadze, the former U.S.S.R. foreign
minister. It specified that even though the treaty had not been
ratified, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. agreed to abide by
the terms of the treaty beginning June 15, 1990
Russia is asking to move the boundary line in such a way
that an additional 40,000 square miles of ocean
and seabed would belong to Russia.

Ed
: Military advantage:
Olson notes the area's strategic value as
well.
Beneath the icy waters around the islands, submarine warfare has
taken place in the past between the former Soviet Union and the
United States. The ice is now one of the last
places for submarines to hide. The islands
could also be hosts to vital facilities tracking hostile
government movements.
"Everybody knows that the shortest distance between the U.S.
mainland and Asia is the polar route, giving easy access to
aircraft and whatever else," Olson explained. "And the
Asian mainland doesnt just consist of Russia. It includes
China.

A two-stage Taepo Dong-2 could carry a

continental United States. With a third stage, it could reach all

nuclear weapons, and it has chemical and biological weapons
programs.

The US official also said North Korea had begun producing
the long-range Taepodong 2 missile, which has
the capacity to reach mainland US or
northern Australia. It was almost ready to be exported, the
official said.
"(North Korea has been) developing and perfecting a
completely new and different missile system, an
intermediate-range missile system based on improved, different
technology," the official said. http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,7242129%255E401,00.html
TD-2
Missiles fired without our knowing it
the TD-2 could be deployed rapidly. It is
unlikely the U.S. would know
of such a decision much before the missile was launched. This
missile could reach major cities and military bases in Alaska and
the smaller, westernmost islands in the Hawaiian chain.
Light-weight variations of the TD-2 could fly as far as 10,000
km, placing at risk western U.S. territory in an arc extending
northwest from Phoenix, Arizona, to Madison, Wisconsin. These
variants of the TD-2 would require additional time to develop and
would likely require an additional flight test."

The North Koreans initially denied the
allegation, but then admitted it the following day, U.S.

year as part of an axis of evil, saying it sponsored
terrorism. Through a White House spokesman, Bush on Thursday
described North Koreas admission that it was running a

China is North Koreas neighbor and final remaining major
