"As long as you think you have a better idea," Rabbi Moshe David Tendler recently said, "one that the Master of the Universe didn't think of, He waits until you finish. Once you make up your mind that there's nothing to do, then you come to the conclusion,
'We have no one to rely on, except our Father in Heaven.'
Rabbi Tendler, of Yeshiva University, spoke last month with
Voices magazine.
http://www.voices-magazine.com/ .

Senator Hillary Clinton once said that
“Israel is the canary in the mineshaft :
What happens to Israel will happen to the rest of the world” (JP
, Sunday, Feb 24 2002, p.1).
In times past a caged canary was taken by coal miners down into a mine.  If the canary stopped singing and passed out, the coal miners knew that deadly gases were present and they took appropriate action.  A canary in the mine shaft is a tripwire, a lightning rod.
What happens to Israel is also a sign of coming events for the rest of the world. If the world ignores Israel’s frantic chirping and warnings, the same attacks now being carried out against Israel will happen to the rest of the world. Bombs blew up for years in Jerusalem, in Tel Aviv and in Netanya. Now they have begun to explode in New York and in London" -- ffm

PINCER MOVEMENT : Troops surrounding Israel

Syrian-in-Lebanon troops move south of Beirut closer to Israel -- April 27, 2005

Egyptian Border Troops ( military; not police ) stationed in Sinai near Israel-- April 25, 2005
violates Camp David Accords March 26, 1979
The Israeli permission for 750 Egyptian soldiers to enter the Philadelphi route, partially equipped with armored vehicles and armored personnel carriers, seemingly contradicts the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty, which was approved by the Knesset in March 1979.
During the Camp David talks, then-U.S. president Jimmy Carter asked the American embassy in Tel Aviv to check whether Israeli constitutional law obligated the prime minister to obtain Knesset approval for an international agreement. The president learned that no such constitutional obligation existed, but the prime minister, Menachem Begin, made it clear to him that in any event he considered himself dependent on the Knesset's approval.

Peres ( There he goes again ) -- June 6, 2005
Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres, meanwhile, said the government made a mistake in annexing all of east Jerusalem following the Six Day War.
"Whoever thinks that 240,000 Arabs from east Jerusalem could be annexed while Jerusalem stays a Jewish capital is as mistaken as those who say the city can be divided with fences and walls," Peres said at the Labor Party's Jerusalem Day celebration at the capital's Gerard Behar Center on Sunday.
"If there isn't peace in Jerusalem, there won't be peace in the country, and if we don't leave the Gaza Strip, there won't be peace in Jerusalem."

Peres: Divide Jerusalem; Give Hebron away -- July 25, 2005

Vice Premier Shimon Peres said on Sunday that there was no chance of reaching a "conclusive agreement" with the Palestinians unless Israel partitioned Jerusalem and ceded the West Bank city of Hebron.
The Labor Party chairman said he believes "there is no chance of reaching a conclusive agreement with the Palestinian Authority without giving back Hebron and dividing Jerusalem."

Peres: Withdrawal Beyond Gaza...Yeshua and Judea too ( West Bank ) -- Dec. 12, 2004
The Sunday Times writes that Shimon Peres feels that Sharon will "eventually be prepared to withdraw from more West Bank land than the small amount designated in his disengagement plan." Peres is on the verge of leading his party into a unity government with the Likud which will give Peres a major say in diplomatic affairs.
Asked if he could work with Sharon towards the same objective as he did with Yitzhak Rabin, Peres replied, “I hope so.”
The logical conclusion, according to Peres and the Times, is that Sharon agrees that "tens of thousands of Jewish residents" in Judea and Samaria must be expelled from their homes.

Mr. Peres is already looking beyond the disengagement from Gaza," Netanyahu said, "towards a return to the 1967 borders and the division of Jerusalem. Labor has apparently not learned very much from the dismal failure of Oslo. In any event, the Likud will have to stand very strongly on its principles, namely, no return to 1967 borders and no division of Jerusalem."

Sharon - Peres ... co- premieres
"Can two walk together and be not agreed"? Amos 3
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon intends to ask Labor chairman Shimon Peres to run the country together with him in a new "super-deputy premiership," that would grant Peres vast powers, beyond those enjoyed by any no. 2 to the prime minister before, sources close to Sharon told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.
Sharon, who is 76, hinted about a key role for the 81-year-old Peres when he said, "The people of our generation have on their shoulders the responsibility to resolve the [Israeli-Palestinian] conflict."
Unity Government .... Nationalist and Religious parties united
Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said he would meet with Shas chairman Eli Yishai on Sunday. Shalom said he believes every Likud-led government must have religious ministers.
Ehud Barak, who had earlier opposed joining the government, told his associates that he would "support any bridge necessary to make sure that disengagement becomes a reality in every way requested

Landau predicts that Sharon will divide Jerusalem -- Feb. 21, 2005
And Sharon’s willingness to abandon his own convictions and surrender Gaza and northern Samaria proves he has the capacity to one day give in on Jerusalem and divide the city, Landau told a gathering of Likud activists Sunday.
When Sharon is finished, all that will “remain for actual negotiations will be Jerusalem; in the end [Jerusalem] will be at the heart of peace negotiations,
and in the end Sharon will divide Jerusalem,” Landau said.

Sharon may not divide Jerusalem, but he will make foreign total-takeover easy,
because of all the consessions he has made.

Divide Jerusalem ? June 10, 2004
Yet this is what is being proposed as the fence goes up around, and perhaps through, Jerusalem. If Yossi Beilin were to have his way with the Geneva accord, the division would run right through the city's heart. Ehud Olmert has a slightly different idea: He wants the fence to wall off the city's peripheral Arab neighborhoods, like Isawiya (near French Hill), and Umm Tuba (near Ramat Rahel), while maintaining Israeli sovereignty over more central Arab neighborhoods such as the American Colony.
What is to be said about this? First, that it is an ugly idea: ugly in its premises, ugly in its ramifications. And it is one that with better leadership from people like Olmert (who spent nine years as mayor railing against division), might have been avoided. Still, the issue is upon us, and must be debated on the merits

Jerusalem Barrier; final route -- March 14, 2005
Ed. note: Will Jerusalem eventually be cut off ??
The Israeli government official said the barrier largely follows Jerusalem's municipal boundaries. Israel drew those boundaries after capturing east Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war. At the time, it annexed that sector and several West Bank villages to the city.

Ariel Zilber : for God and country at Gush Katif -- March 14, 2005
The curly-haired personification of the Israeli mix of humor and stubborn will, Zilber says he is planning on traveling to the Knesset before the Jewish holiday of Purim, “wearing sackcloth and with ashes on my head like Mordechai [from the Purim story] to prevent this expulsion which will simply mark the end of Israel. The people have been brainwashed to not care about their own brothers and sisters here. They care about children in Kosovo, about tsunami victims, but about our own people they say, ‘let them go, it’s OK.’”

Israel to take away guns from evacuees; told to trust security forces instead -- April 12, 2005

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military plans to disarm residents of four Jewish settlements in the West Bank two weeks before the communities are to be dismantled this summer, officials said Monday, reflecting growing concern that settler resistance in the West Bank will be far more difficult to put down than in the fenced-in Gaza Strip.
Access for Israeli extremists already living in the West Bank to the four tiny northern settlements is relatively easy, and the warning conjured images of thousands of ultranationalists converging on the settlements to prevent their evacuation — as they have resisted removal of unauthorized outposts in recent months.
Officials expressed concern about armed confrontations, and settlers said Monday they would not hand in their guns
"How many deaths will it take till he ( Sharon ) knows that too many people have died ??"
Chaim Weiss, the secretary of Homesh, said there are no plans to confront soldiers during evacuation.
However, he said settlers would refuse to give up their weapons. "We need to defend ourselves and our families ... I think it will be a tragedy to take our weapons," Weiss said.

MORAL OBEDIENCE

IDF after Passover -- March 31, 2005
Eran Sternberg, spokesman for Gush Katif, said today that he recently received an order to show up for reserve duty in a place he had never been called to before.  "I realized that we were being called up in
order to allow younger soldiers who usually guard that area to be trained in how to take part in the expulsion.  I had no hesitation. I called my headquarters and told them that I would not be showing up, as I had no intention of enabling other soldiers to take a training course in how to bend my wife's arm and how to take her baby from her arms.  I know that the purpose of the army is to protect the Jewish People in its land, and not to remove Jews from their homes."

Yesha to back moral obedience ( misnamed 'civil disobedience' ) -- Dec. 20, 2004
Government content ( happy ? ) that thousands of people are willing to go to prison
Wallerstein letter
"I'm not scared of going to prison," he wrote, "and I hope that many people will understand, like me, that
this is the price we must pay in order to fight this unethical crime
...this law of persecution – a law that is cruel, wicked, dictatorial, anti-democratic, and oppressive, reminiscent of anti-Semitic laws throughout history, anti-Zionist and anti-national, and a disgrace to those who legislated it.
Those who enforce or implement it will be fulfilling a blatantly illegal order."

" calling evil, 'good' ...and good, 'evil' ...Isaiah 5:20
others who "self-righteously act as if disobeying this law is a blow to democracy. The opposite is true: Since this law is anti-democratic, the refusal to obey it is the way to stabilize our democracy.
This evil approach of presenting those who initiate the pogrom as if they are the 'princes of democracy' stems, in part, from ignorance of the very fundamentals of democracy."

HaEtzni quoted Ariel Sharon himself as recommending, in the past, two important approaches "that will be the keys to our victory.
1. One is civil disobedience to the law of transfer, and
2. one is refusal by security forces to enforce the expulsion."

In 1995, in the face of plans to give Jewish land to the Palestinian Authority, then-opposition MK Ariel Sharon said, "As one who has served in the army for many years, I say that a soldier must fulfill orders. If he feels that the order given him is against his conscience, he must turn personally, and I emphasize 'personally,' and explain this to his commander – and be willing to bear the consequences.'

( Ed. note: Fence-straddler ) .....
Finance Minister Binyamin Netanyahu (Likud) said this morning that civil disobedience is a recognized democratic tool, "but if someone employs this tool, the government has the right to punish him."

Goldstein : "If a democracy is permitted to make laws to throw people out of their homes, and to declare me a law-breaker just by my very presence in my home - then what's a dictatorship?" he asked today.

Yesha Leader ( PW ) ready to go to jail -- Dec. 20, 2004
the government plan “allows the crime of uprooting Jews from their homes” and that the proper reaction is

If someone were to try to pass a law for a transfer like this of some Arab village... all the knights of justice and civil rights would immediately protest and scream their hearts out to the heavens. But when it concerns Yesha residents, there is no justice and there are no rights,”
it legalizes an unspeakable crime: the forcible uprooting of Jews from their homes."

Jewish Law to precede Israeli Law -- Dec. 20, 2004
righteousness over political expediency
responsibility over arbitrary, robotic commands
conscience over complicity
Journalist David Bedein told Arutz-7, "It was fantastic to see 250 people, most of them lawyers and most of them very knowledgeable in Judaism, discussing the definition of an illegal order and concluding with a consensus that one must not adhere to such an order. They brought many examples from our sources, such as King Saul's order to kill the Priests of Nov, where it was clear that an illegal order of this nature must not be carried out." [ Acts 5:29 ]

"They spoke of the general responsibility of a soldier in the field who receives an illegal order. The soldier has the responsibility to decide on his own; he is not just a robot who must fulfill orders, but must rather use his own judgment. This was something that everyone agreed on: the responsibility of the individual to consider the situation and use his own judgment

Jewish Law Heritage :
Jewish Law provides inspiration for state law, or actually becomes the law
freedom of religion is guaranteed in both the Declaration of Independence and the Basic Laws

Rabbi Dov Lior
explains Acts 5:29
"Any army order to dismantle Jewish communities is an anti-religious act, Rabbi Dov Lior of Kiryat Arba told Arutz-7 Radio Wednesday. He added that army policy dictates that a solider does not have to carry out an order against his religion."
( Ed. note: we interpret "religion" to mean conscience. )
In answer to soldiers' questions concerning orders to participate in removing Jews from their homes, Rabbi Lior responded that such an order is a religious violation; therefore, he said, the soldiers are exempt from carrying it out.
In any event, he [ Rabbi Moshe Hagar ] said, he has told his students not to refuse orders unless they are
willing "to pay the price", even if it means going to jail.

Rabbi Aviner explains
Acts 5:29
One such leading rabbinical figure is Rabbi Shlomo Aviner of Beit El, who makes a distinction between a sin such as desecrating the Sabbath, which a soldier must refuse to do for non-military purposes, and uprooting Jewish communities. The former is an individual sin, Rabbi Aviner said, while the latter is a sin by the polity, for which the soldiers following military orders are not liable. Speaking with IDF Radio earlier this month, Rabbi Aviner explained that current government "disengagement" policies are in direct contradiction to the Torah.
The rabbi stressed that we may not commit an improper act towards achieving a desired goal,

Bush and Europeans soften towards Hamas -- June 6, 2005
The shift also follows a behind-the-scenes push by European allies, including Britain and France, for Washington to drop its call to dismantle Hamas completely. European officials warned Washington that doing so would be a "disaster" for Palestinians who benefit from Hamas aid, sources said.
"There is now a realization that they (Hamas) do have a role to play ... that if you can bring them into the political fold, then you'll be marginalizing the military elements of those groups," said a European diplomat.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said President George W. Bush has not changed his view of Hamas as a terrorist group that must be disarmed

European diplomats said a strong election showing by Hamas and a cease-fire deal could prompt reconsideration of the EU's decision to put Hamas on its terrorist blacklist.
Though officials insist there is no change in the U.S. policy against drawing distinctions -- as Europe does -- between Hamas' political and military operations, the administration may be moving in that direction, diplomats and experts say.
While asserting that the United States will not deal directly with Hamas "terrorists," a senior Bush administration official said
it may be willing to have contact with politicians "affiliated with the group."

European Diaspora of the Jews : The End is Near
"I see the end of the Diaspora of Jews in Europe," said Rabbi Lau, a survivor of the Holocaust and a popular lecturer in America and Europe. He called on Israel "to prepare for a new phase of the spiritual and physical absorption of European Jewry before they consider emigrating to the Unites States or Australia [instead]."

He warned that rising anti-Semitism threatens the Jews of Europe, noting that anti-Semitism is on the rise in nearly every European country - expressed, among other ways, via extreme anti-Israel sentiments. Jewish Agency statistics have more than 1.14 million Jews in Europe, including more than a million in western Europe

EU to assist Israel into the U.N. -- Dec. 27, 2004

It offers Israel many of the same rights afforded states within the European Union. The plan opens Europe's economic, cultural and scientific doors to Israel in exchange for an enhanced EU involvement in the Middle East diplomatic process. Within the context of the plan the EU also promises to combat anti-Semitism and to help Israel normalize its relations with international organizations including the UN.
Hiensch, whose country now holds the EU presidency, said that the EU is so serious about combatting anti-Semitism that it would be committed to that battle even if there were no action plan.

The Neighborhood Agreement with Israel as well as a similar document agreed on between the EU and the Palestinian Authority reflects Europe's desire to play a larger role in the Middle East, said Hiensch. "I expect the EU's role [in the Middle East] to increase," he continued.

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer : NATO + Mediterranean Dialogue ( Jordan- Abdullah) .... Jan. 18- 2005
Partnership for Peace ..the "Alliance" of 26 members + others
In recent years, Jordan has been especially active in the Mediterranean Dialogue’s military programme. This includes training at NATO educational establishments, port visits by NATO vessels, as well as other meetings involving the Jordanian military and their NATO counterparts. Moreover, Jordan has also expressed great interest in border security, civil emergency planning and counter-terrorism. And I see considerable further potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in those areas, given
the new phase which the Mediterranean Dialogue has now entered

Partnership for Peace was developed in a specific, largely European, context. But several elements of PfP appear very valuable to our southern neighbours, as they have proven to be to our neighbours to the east. This applies, for example, to cooperation on defence reform and joint training; to cooperation in intelligence sharing in the fight against terrorism; but also to actual operational cooperation to defend against terrorism – such as possible participation in NATO’s maritime operation in the Mediterranean. Basically an anti-terrorist operation.
Med-Dialogue, an Alliance of 26 members P f P
Practical cooperation is where NATO’s comparative advantage lies. The Alliance is an organisation where 26 member states and dozens of other countries are engaged in political and military cooperation and coordination on a daily basis. It is the combination of political dialogue and practical cooperation that makes all the difference. That is the approach we have always taken within NATO, and with considerable success. It is this approach which we now wish to widen to
the Mediterranean Dialogue

Israeli officials said they don't believe NATO members from the European Union would significantly expand defense relations with the seven states of the Mediterranean Dialogue. They said Israel would not be included because of objections by EU states to the Israeli-Palestinian war.
The Bush administration has been lobbying NATO to include the seven Mediterranean states in the alliance's Partnership for Peace program. This would increase the prospect of military training, exchange of intelligence and NATO help to the defense ministries of the Middle East states. The alliance met in Istanbul, Turkey on June 28.

* EU supports NATO in Iraq ( beyond North-Atlantic boundaries) - June 26, 2004
NATO morphs into a global multi-national force ("terrible of the nations?)
( nose now in big tent of the Mid-East )
The United States and the European Union agreed in a joint statement to back Iraq's request for NATO military help and support the training of Iraqi security forces, and to reduce Iraq's international debt, estimated to be $120 billion. NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said later that diplomats reached an initial agreement to respond positively to the Iraqi request. Nineteen of NATO's 26 members are in the EU.
Bush asked the EU to offer membership to Turkey, a key U.S. ally in the war against terror.

In other declarations and statements issued at the close of the brief summit, the United States and EU agreed to:
Better combat terrorism by sharing data on lost and stolen passports, work more closely on hunting down terrorist' financing networks and increasing cooperation between law enforcement agencies on both sides of the Atlantic.

Sharansky : defining a free society -- Jan. 6, 2005
In it, Sharansky stated that as long as the West appeases Middle Eastern dictators, those leaders will have no incentive to make democratic reforms and allow their people to be free.
"People who are concerned about security have to understand that security can be brought only if you connect it to the question of [a] free society," Sharansky told a briefing for diplomats and journalists at the Institute for Contemporary Affairs in Jerusalem.
"You cannot separate the question of the rights of the person, of the individual from the equation of what type of society this person lives in," he said.
"If you really are fighting for human rights, you have to fight for the right of society to be free, free from fear and the moment this connection happens then [there is] no doubt that freedom can prevail," he added

According to Sharansky there are only two types of society in the world: a free society and a fear society.
A free society permits dissidents, while a fear society squelches dissent.
"In every fear society, very quickly emerge three groups of people:
true believers, dissidents and double thinkers,". -- those who long for freedom
but are too afraid to speak out against the ruling regime, Sharansky said

"Double-think becomes [the] normal way of life of [the] majority of people even in Saudi Arabia ... and it means that people have ... to control themselves, to remember that what they are saying at home is not the same [that] they can say publicly," he said

Both Sharon and Abbas have constituencies deeply opposed to reconciliation, and only U.S. power and persuasion can get them to compromise on an array of issues, analysts say.
"It's risky politics--they have to confront their base, or their extremists," said Indyk, who now directs the Saban Center for Middle East Studies at the Brookings Institution. "To get them to do that, they need the warm embrace of the United States and a noodge from the United States."

Looking for Messiah in all the wrong places -- Dec. 30, 2004

Ed. note: This is not in agreement with the Book of Daniel
The venerated Rabbi Yitzchak Kaduri, considered Israel's leading Kabbalist rabbi, was quoted in the Yediot Acharonot newspaper on Dec. 12 as saying:
"We are now in the fourth year of what could be the seven-year Redemption period, according to the calculation of the
Vilna Gaon. [However.] in the coming three years, uncertainty about the future will hang over our heads, unless we work and strive that the Messiah be revealed. Ed. note > False statement :"The Messiah is already [here] in Israel".

"Whatever people are sure will not happen, is liable to happen, and whatever we are certain will happen may disappoint us. But in the end, there will be peace throughout the world. The world is mitmatek mehadinim (lit., becoming sweet from/of strict justice), great tragedies in the world are foreseen, that's the thing of the Jews going to the East. [emphasis added] But our enemies will not prevail over us in the Land of Israel, 'fear and trembling will fall upon them,' in the [merit of the] power of Torah." ...Ed. note:
Repentance does not come by do-goodism. It comes by acknowledging Yeshua of Nazareth as Savior and God.
"This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent" John 6:29

Rabbi Kaduri said this week, "What can save the world from calamities is real repentance by Jews, who must increase acts of kindness towards one another... The cry of the many poor in Israel and the expulsion of Jews from their homes shakes the world... It's not for naught that this place was hit, where many of our compatriots went to look for this-worldly lusts."
Rabbi Kaduri has told his students that the current government will be the last one of the "old era," and that the new government will already have leadership of the Messianic era.

" I AM come in My Father's name ( HaShem) , and ye receive Me not:
If another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive". John 5: 43

Another sage, Rabbi Chaim Kanevsky of Bnei Brak, was quoted in Yediot in the same article as saying that we are verily in the period of the beginning of the Redemption period, and that the Messiah could be revealed at any moment.
Ed : This concept does not agree with Scripture ( Daniel and Revelation ( Apocalypse )
Messiah cannot be revealed until after the time of Jacob's Trouble ...the 3 1/2 years of the Great Tribulation

He called for further outreach "in order to prevent calamities and to bring mercy from the Creator. All Jews must come to the Land of Israel." The Rabbi also called to establish Torah schools in every area, and that "Torah study will prevent calamities – from earthquakes to other natural disasters."
The Kipa website, a Hebrew-language forum for religious youth, features a response by Rabbi Uziel Eliyahu, Chief Rabbi of the Misgav Regional Council in the Galilee regarding a Jewish approach to the calamitous events. "First of all," Rabbi Eliyahu wrote, "we should pray and ask G-d to remove His wrath from the word, send a complete recovery to the injured, and help and protect everyone in the world, causing sorrow to depart."

Rabbi Eliyahu added that what is happening now was decreed on Rosh HaShanah [the Jewish New Year]: "It was a Divine decree that was issued regarding 'who will be killed by water, and who by fire...'" Our job now, he wrote, is to "pray to G-d, to try harder in studying Torah and fulfilling the Torah and doing acts of kindness and charity. This is an hour of reckoning for the entire world!!!"
Rabbi Eliyahu emphasized that G-d has complete control of nature, and that the Jewish People live "amidst great faith, despite questions that remain open. No question mark can break our strength of great and perfect faith in G-d... This does not prevent us from asking and searching for answers and [logical] explanations, but it all takes place on the solid ground of great faith in G-d... The Bible (Zechariah 14) mentions that in the future, when the Messiah comes, the Mt. of Olives will be split in two... The Messiah can come at any minute, even as you read these lines..."
( Ed : Not so....Not until after the 3 1/2 yrs. of Jacob's Trouble )

Israel seeks International Force -- Oct. 19, 2004
On Monday, Israeli National Security Adviser Giora Eiland told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that the government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon expected an international force to be deployed along the Egyptian-Gaza border. Eiland, a major general, did not specify the force.
For more than 20 years, the Multinational Force and Observer has been patrolling the Sinai Peninsula to enforce the
1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. Over the last year, the United States, with the largest contingent in the MFO, has reduced its force from 865 to about 665 soldiers. Additional cuts were expected in 2005.

JEWISH STATISTICS
As of the beginning of the new year of 5765 ( 04-2005 ), the number of Jews in the world stands at almost
13 million
people.
Of these, almost 40% - 5,094,000 - are in Israel, while almost 44% are in North America.
Some 413,000 still remain in the former Soviet Union, and there are 1,161,000 in Europe, 401,000 in South America, 19,000 in Asia, 84,000 in Africa, and 107,000 in Oceania.

The Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI)'s recent report on Jewish demographics states that the Jewish people are approaching zero growth.  It noted that over the past 24 years, "the world's total population grew by nearly 2.5 billion, an increase of over 70 percent. In contrast, the total Jewish population increased by only 250,000, or 2 percent."

The situation in the United Kingdom appears to be particularly acute.  Demographers predict that Britain's Jewish population will drop between 30-60,000 in the coming 20 years, to a total of 240,000.  The report notes a significant rise in interfaith marriage in Britain, with 38% of all married men, and 50% of Jewish women under 30, marrying non-Jewish partners.
