Dear Whosoever,
If you are having difficulty with any type of addiction
( drinking, drugs, illicit sex, over-eating, smoking, gambling
etc.)
then may I suggest the following websites:
http://users.cybertime.net/~ajgood/addictions.html
and
Barefoot Bob's site.
There you will find Bob's collection of invaluable material from
AA --Alcoholics Anonymous. Of special interest is :

The 12 Steps of the AA program are the foundational steps to all
Recovery Programs. All 12 step programs have the highest rate of
recovery than any other programs.

It begins with what is called " a moment of
clarity" in which a person sees himself ( or herself )
as having a problem. Up until that moment of clarity, the
person is in denial ( I can handle it, I can "cut
down". )
In actuality, there is no such a thing as "cutting
down". These programs are successful because they work a
total abstinence program. But rather than trying to go without
alcohol ( or drugs, or illicit sex or sugars or cigarettes or
gambling ) forever, they emphasize that a person only practices
100 % abstinence for a 24 hour period only ... "one day at a
time". Putting it in bite size pieces makes it easier to
swallow and to practice " one day at a time".
Adding up each 24 hour period -- day after day-- a person finds
themselves finally climbing out of Satan's pit.
On October 10th of this year, I will have practiced a 12 step
program for 32 successful years of complete abstinence "one
day at a time". I could not do it without God's help, even
today.
"No human power could deliver us from our addiction, but God
could and would, if He were sought. "
May you have the courage to seek Him now.
It doesn't take an iron-will ( willpower ) ; it takes Surrender (
willingness ) to let God take control of one's life. "The
oak breaks, the willow bends. "
Here is a poem written by a friend, who has since gone to be with
the Lord
"in that Big Meeting in the sky."

As for 'compassionate' doctors ... I once had one of
those, 33 years ago, who tried putting me on Valium as an
alternative. Need I say more ? Compassion is not finding an
alternative -- nor prescribing
"cutting back " -- rather it
recommends practicing total abstinence, one day at a time.
True compassion is telling a person that they need a 12 step
program for moral support, as soon as possible.
It puts good intentions into shoe-leather. "Bring
the body, the mind will follow"
So, whoever you are, may you be good to yourself. May you
become your own best friend and do yourself a favor.
May you have the humility to reach out for help. Pride will keep
you from Heaven. ....
"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the
kingdom of God? Be not deceived:
Neither fornicators, nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor
effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
Nor theives, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor
extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1 Corinthians 6: 9,10
also please see Romans 13: 13 ....
Rev. 9:21 "sorceries" means
"pharmakia" ( addictive drugs: "chewing
your booze".)
and also Rev. 21:8 .

a 12 step messenger -- "There but for the Grace
of God, go I "
P.S. For the spouses of addicts, there is Al-Anon,
a program where the partner lets go of controlling and scolding,
and instead lets God handle the matter.
