"If you dont believe in the Final Coming of Christ,
then I suggest that you dont really believe in the first
coming of this True Child of God. They are inseparable as
lightening and thunder. The parousia and the incarnation
go together. If they are not inseparably linked in our faith, our
Christmas activities are in danger of becoming a sentimental
excursion into fantasy;

They have the hope in
their hearts; they want what's coming.
But what if that's not you? What if you're unprepared?
What if you're caught partying when you should be serving?

Rev. Dr. Scott Black Johnston : ( with
Editor insertions )
"Luke instructs us to be vigilant
in apocalyptic times, because there is more to see than death and
destruction. In the midst of the apocalypse,
God dwells.
[ Ed:
Jesus ] Christ is [ Ed: obtainable ] at the center of the chaos of this text. In this we
can take comfort; we are not alone in the midst
of the apocalypse. ....
The biblical images that we study at the
beginning of Advent are included in our holy texts to give us
hope-not hope based on ignoring the problems of the
world, but [ a ] hope grounded in a God who stands in
the midst of these times offering us all redemption.
In this, the clear assertion of Luke's Gospel is that while the
powers of evil are real and terrible, they are not permanent.
The only thing that endures to the very end is God's vision for
humanity-a vision articulated by the prophets of old (curmudgeons
like Jeremiah) who spoke words of justice, and peace, and
[ Ed:
the physical return of Jesus to our earth for the ] restoration for the world.
.. this literature encourages us to be faithful in the
midst of troubled times and places where God is already at work.
This is the snapshot that our liturgy would have us carry in our
pockets this Advent. These texts provide us with pictures of
those people who can clearly see the end of the world from where
they are standing. In those pictures we can also see images of a
God who is with them" [ Ed: Emmanuel ] ;

Second Sunday in Advent
Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
It was John's job to
tell of the One to come, the Messiah, the One who would send the
Holy Spirit into those he baptized. One whose words and deeds
would have even more impact than John's. One who would separate
out or winnow the good from the bad, the fruit from the waste
materials. One that John knew as friend and family, whom John had
already come to respect and highly value, but didn't know as the
One. The One was Jesus.

We still sit in darkness, but a dawn is breaking.
The shadow of death still weighs heavy over our hearts, but a
dawn is breaking. The days are surely coming when our
feet will be shown the way of peace, when our mouths will sing a
song of hope.
It is a challenging thing to live with hope and still be
realistic about the battered and bruised world in our midst. But
this is what it means to be people of Advent. Constantly writing
our songs of hope, so that they might be sung on that day when
promises begin to bloom in fulfillment. Amen.

2nd Sunday of Advent : Season of Change
http://www.predigten.uni-goettingen.de/aktuell-index.html
" Do not ignore this one fact,
beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and
a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his
promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not
wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day
of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will
pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved
with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will
be disclosed.
Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God " --2 Peter 3: 8

So they went to Jesus and asked
him John's question : "Are you Coming One?". Jesus told
them, "see for yourselves!"
The evidence was all around them.
Advent is the season of coming. What John's followers saw was
just a beginning, a sampling of what the coming of the Kingdom of
God and the end of this-world-as-we-know-it would bring. Jesus'
main course was yet to come, in all its ugly horror and
overpowering glory. On this side of the death and rising of
Christ, we are looking forward to the rest of it, to Christ's
return, bringing with Him the full force of the Kingdom of God. Christ is with us
now, too, thanks to the Spirit,
and we can live in the wonders of that till all is complete. So,
even though Jesus has come, and is here, we still are waiting.
Something's afoot, and we wait for it to come.

Emmanuel -- God is with us 24 / 7 all year long ; each and every
day
God is here with us
now, helping us in the midst of our troubles
This story [ Gospel-Nativity ] should stir our hearts and lead us to worship because of what the story means to our daily
lives.
The coming of Jesus into the world means,
God is not our enemy He wants to be our friend
God is not detached and distant but is involved in our lives
God cares about us and stands with us in the tough times of life.
