All the usual features of a high-end sport-utility vehicle are
there, as well as a mobile video system, an onboard personal
computer, built-in night-vision, high-voltage door handles and
even a tack dispenser to help throw off the chase.....focused on
the marriage of military and industry to create a more mobile,
versatile and adaptive fighting force.
The
vehicle comes well-equipped for that. When started, its door
handles will maintain a high-enough voltage to stun an enemy for
several minutes. Its weapons - the laser and percussion grenades
- are designed more to clear obstructions and temporarily stop
enemies than to cause serious bodily harm. It has front-and-back
dazzling lights, which are so bright that the NAC says "the
enemy cannot look directly at the vehicle."
The SmarTruck was also designed to be secure. It has Kevlar-like
armor covering everything but the floorboards, an onboard
bomb-detection unit and a fingerprint identification system that
requires a special ring and the correct print before it allows

DMATs are a civilian version of military mobile hospitals, and his unit is
one of five in Florida.
The federal government created DMATs so civilian emergency or
health workers can assist in disasters that overwhelm local
emergency medical personnel. The National Disaster Management
System and U.S. Public Health Service call the shots, and the volunteers are
considered temporary federal employees. They must be ready
to leave on short notice and operate for at least three days,
providing medical care at a site they set up.
There are 45 DMATs nationwide [in most of the States]. All have learned the
basics for reacting to a biological attack, the type of terrorism
t attack for which they are most likely to be called for.

The U.S. military is shifting its approach toward Guantanamo
detainees, offering more rewards for cooperative behavior, the
task force commander overseeing the detention mission at this
U.S. base says.
Benefits include the opportunity to sleep, eat and pray together
in a new medium-security detention wing under construction.
Currently prisoners are held in maximum-security
individual cells, [ solitary confinement ] where communal activities
are limited.
The first
detainees arrived in January. Not quite a year later, more than
600 detainees from 43 countries are being held here.
They have not been formally charged and have no access to lawyers
or courts. The U.S. government argues it has the right to hold
the men as enemy combatants while officials interrogate them and

controversial development. They're trained and armed, wear
official-looking uniforms with badges, and drive official-looking
vehicles. It's making some neighbors nervous and some
law-enforcement officials wary. It also reflects important
aspects of western rural culture and attitudes toward government
agencies and firearms.
Are they
Robin Hoods or vigilantes? They prefer to think of themselves as
a sort of "neighborhood watch" for the woods. As they
head up into the Willamette National Forest along the Cascade
Mountain range, their goal this day is to repair and replace
bullet-riddled signs, vandalized information boxes, and other
damaged facilities. Along the way, they'll keep an eye out for
signs of illegal activity as well as for hunters or hikers who
may need help. They'll also remove a "widow maker" tree
trunk hanging over a rough road into a wilderness trailhead and
tack up a fire warning sign that has blown down, and stop to see
if the driver of an overheated van needs help.
Many
of the members volunteer as firefighters or with sheriff's
departments, and have served on search-and-rescue teams. They
include military veterans, some of whom have special weapons and
tactics (SWAT) experience. They all have EMT
(emergency medical technician) training, and they've conducted
first-responder certification classes for small police and fire
departments in the area
