7.  TEHERAN'S TENTACLES OF TERROR
(OP-ED, Jerusalem Post)

In the nearly five months since the horrific terror attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, it has become increasingly clear the United States is entirely serious about prosecuting its global war on terror. The
seminal events of September 11, and President George W. Bush's courageous and determined stance following them, have redefined international relations, forcing nations to make a simple choice between good and evil, between fighting terror and fomenting it.

As recent events indicate, one nation in particular has made its choice decidedly evident:
Iran. And, unfortunately, rather than abandoning the use of terror as an instrument of its foreign policy, Teheran has decided to intensify it, stepping up its efforts to attack Israel and undermine Western interests throughout the region.

With regard to Israel, the ayatollahs have sharply increased their support for various terror groups in a transparent effort to kill as many Israelis as possible. As Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said at the United Nations, the Iranians have transferred some missiles and Katyusha rockets to Hizbullah, and Iranian Revolutionary Guards are active in
Lebanon.

"They [Iran] have converted Lebanon into a powder keg capable of exploding," Peres rightly pointed out. And, in fact, Hizbullah has recently stepped up its terror activities, firing anti-aircraft shells across the border.

In addition to its support for terror in Lebanon, Iran has apparently been active in
Jordan, too. King Abdullah II recently told Bush Iran has developed a plan to carry out major terror attacks against Israel from Jordan. According to the report, Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists trained by Iran and Hizbullah
have tried on 17 different occasions to attack Israel with rockets and mortars
from inside Jordan. If accurate, the report would mean Iran is actively trying to open up yet another terrorist front against us.

While worrisome, this development is hardly surprising. After all, Iran officially rejects Israel's right to exist, and it makes little effort to hide its ambition to destroy us. Less than two months ago, former president Hashemi
Rafsanjani spoke openly about
using nuclear weapons, saying the "application of an atomic bomb would not leave anything in Israel, but the same thing would just produce damage in the Muslim world."

And it was just a month ago that naval commandos captured the Karine A ship en route from Iran to
Gaza with over 50 tons of rockets, missiles, and other heavy weaponry. By reaching out to form an alliance with PA Chairman Yasser Arafat and agreeing to sell him weapons, Iran was once again signaling its desire to heat up the terrorist front. Bush was right on target, therefore, when he cited Iran as a member of the "axis of evil" in his State of the Union speech last week.

Both in its actions and in its words, Iran has become a global menace. It is vigorously pursuing efforts to acquire ballistic missile technology and weapons of mass destruction, which would enable the ayatollahs to threaten
Western Europe and even the US. It is therefore imperative America continues to tighten the screws on Teheran and does not fall prey to vacuous assertions Iran is in the throes of "moderating" or "undergoing reform." The danger posed by Iran to Israel, and to all of Western civilization, is real, and it is growing. Only by confronting this threat head-on and bringing about a change of regimes in Teheran can the world be kept safe in the years to come.
