Homeless receive "scan card"
from Salvation Army , YWCA--
Feb. 6, 2007
" One homeless man likened his numbered ID
card to "the mark of the Beast" from the book of
Revelation.
Others compared the bar code to a Nazi tattoo
and the computer tracking system to something
out of George Orwell's "1984".
But most of the homeless people in Fort Worth seem to have
grudgingly accepted the high-tech
identification card that will soon be required for meals, shelter
and other services at the city's four largest agencies.
"Some people choose not to have them because it's like an
invasion of privacy," [ Ed: a false-"choice" ]
said Jana Webb, as she ate lunch at Union Gospel Mission last
week.
"I have one because you can't eat without them."
More than 2,400 homeless people have used the "scan
cards" to receive services since the Salvation Army began
issuing them last spring, according to Tarrant County Access,
which provides technical support for about 65 Tarrant County
social service agencies, including the homeless shelters.
The cards are a new tool in a data-tracking
system required
of agencies that receive federal grants for homeless services,
[ Ed: This is why we warned of faith-based programs long ago ]
said Access executive director Stephen Braun. By more accurately
counting the homeless and the services they receive, the cards
can help the agencies tailor their programs to help those people
get off the streets, he said. [ Ed: It sounds noble, but they are
already punitive, since one cannot eat without a "scan
card" ]
The Salvation Army began issuing the photo
ID cards that use the Access-funded scan
system last spring [ 2006 ] . Union Gospel Mission followed suit
in December [ 2006 Ed: How sweet; just in time for the cold
season ] , Braun said. The YWCA
is also using the scan cards for its homeless child-care clients,
he said.
Meanwhile, shelter employees have been trying to prepare homeless
clients for the
universal scan cards, which have been met
with confusion and resistance from some clients.

Senior Center Scan cards for access
( or else "access denied" )
Computerized scan cards long ago infiltrated banks and grocery
stores and health clubs. Now they're coming to your local senior
center.
Starting Jan. 2 [ 2007 ] , Beverly will become the latest senior
center to ask people to use a scan card to
enter the building. The new sign-in system requires seniors to swipe their cards in front of a sensor,
then touch a computer screen to indicate which programs they plan
to attend that day.
Administrators say it allows them to keep
better records on how many people use their senior centers and
which activities are the most popular
When his second swipe worked, up popped his
picture on the computer screen with the greeting "Hello
John" and a menu of the day's programs. McKenna
and his wife, Frances, were there to get their blood pressure
checked, so Degan told him to touch the "Wellness
Clinic" icon.
The computerized sign-in systems are sold by a company called
MySeniorCenter in Sherborn. The company's cofounder, 20-year-old
Eric Andersen, said the systems are in more
than 1,000 senior centers across the country. The
price ranges from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the system's
sophistication.
"We don't have every one of the 6,000 seniors in Danvers
entered in the system," she said, "but that's what
we're working toward."

Computerized scan cards at Senior Center
-- real-time interactive
With the new scan cards, which can be easily attached to a key
chain, folks are able to sign in at two convenient locations in
the center, front and back. A simple wave of
the card in front of a high-tech reader brings up a persons
information on an easy-to-read computer touch-screen. Visitors then choose
from a vast menu of activities on the screen including the
classes offered, lectures, events, and even simple socializing.
Because the system is operated with a computer program through MySeniorCenter.com, activities and events
can be updated regularly, even daily or hourly.
Whats more, messages can be sent on an individual or group
basis. For example, if someone leaves behind an item after a
class, a note can be left on their account reminding them to pick
it up.
Each person has their own unique ID number,"
she explained. "Were also taking
photos so that we can more easily identify our regular
visitors."

Education
SNM is implementing an efficient CE credit reporting process at
the Annual Meeting. All registered attendees for the 54th Annual
Meeting will use their ExpoCard which will also serve as a CE
session tracker scan card to claim
CE credit. Physician, pharmacist and physicist attendees will be
required to swipe the scan card as they enter each
course/session. Technologist attendees will be required to swipe
the scan cards as they enter and exit each course/session. When
all cards are swiped in and out for each session, attendees will
receive confirmation that the card has been tracked. Attendees
will be able to review and verify all session tracked information
on a computer kiosk that will be
located in the registration area.

"If any man worship the beast
and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his
hand,
the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God,
which is poured out without mixture into the cup of His
indignation;
and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence
of the Lamb:
And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and ever:
and they have no rest day nor night,
who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the
mark of his name."
