Apocalyptic Hope

Ed: If
the dollar is replaced by the euro, we would have almost a 50%
devalution. When ?
"What might trigger a fatal run on
the dollar in world markets?
While a broad and abrupt selloff by major foreign holders of
dollars for example, China appears unlikely, a cataclysmic event,
similar to the outbreak of World War I in 1914, could prompt a
search for a new international medium of exchange.
In the modern era of automated payments, the upheaval might come
from a terrorist attack that undermines the computerized transfer
facilities of the world's banking system. A catastrophic
loss of electronic records could surely
destroy the credibility of the dollar as the international medium
of exchange."

Two premier financial centers:
"But the euro does have growing strengths.
At current market exchange rates, the European Union
is now larger economically than the US. New central
and eastern European members are bringing enormous dynamism and
flexibility. At the same time, the European Central Bank has
gained considerable credibility from its handling of the global
credit crisis. Indeed, if the euro zone can persuade
Great Britain to become a full-fledged member, thereby acquiring
one of the world's two premier financial centers (London), the
euro might start to look like a viable alternative to the dollar"

higher prices for sure
"Traders are also concerned about possible
production cuts by the
[ OPEC] Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
World supplies have been trimmed by substantial cutbacks
in production in Iraq and Nigeria in recent weeks.
Nigeria alone has lost about 10 percent of its daily production
since guerrillas stepped up their sabotage and kidnapping of oil
workers in the Niger Delta at the end of last year. Some analysts
fear that OPEC could cut
production further when it meets next month

to counter the prospect that a softening world economy may
eventually weaken demand and push prices down.
Were looking at retail prices for regular unleaded of
$3.50 to $3.75 in April and
May, said Tom Kloza, an analyst with Oil Price Information
Service. Those will be records. The record of $3.22 a
gallon was set last May. Mr. Kloza also predicted record highs
for diesel and jet fuel within the next 90 days.

"In a system like this, it's possible to
control everyone by controlling their finances. If all our money
is just zeroes and ones in a computer, we'll
have to get permission to use our own money. If those
who control the money don't like someone, they can deny their
purchases,
making them an economic non-entity."
