Flu : travel bans ;
quarantines , National
Guard ( martial law ) -- May 2, 2006
An outbreak could lead the government to limit
international flights, quarantine exposed travelers and otherwise
restrict movement in and around the country
The report envisions possible breakdowns
in public order and says governors might deploy National Guard
troops or request federal troops to maintain order
This new report is Step 2, outlining how
every branch of government would have to work
together with federal health officials to
try to contain a pandemic and minimize its damage to the economy
and society. By early next month, government agencies are to
release the specific steps they plan.
It calls mandatory
quarantine a last resort, and urges planners
to consider, for example, that
closing a community would sever it from the delivery of groceries
and other essential goods.

Should we prepare for difficult days ahead ?
We believe
that we are to do what we can, while we can.
And when we no
longer can, then God steps in.
When we come
to the end of ourselves and our resources, well, thank God
there's God.
It's like the old
farmer who said,
"God and
I planted this garden...but you should have seen it before it was
a garden."
The meaning is
obvious... God helps those who help themselves.
Here's a maxim
we think of often:
"Pray as
if everything depended upon God; work as if everything depended
upon you."
We don't think it
is lacking in Faith to prepare for bad times ahead.
It just might be sanctified common sense :)
"A
prudent person foresees the difficulties ahead and prepares for
them;
the unprepared
go blindly on and suffer the consequences"

Unisys proposes Identification Authentication -- May 4, 2006
Validating one's identity is something people do
everyday, from logging on to computer networks, conducting online
banking transactions, navigating airport security, and crossing
borders, yet very little global coordination exists in identity
management business practices and procedures.
Establishing ID authentication standards can have a profound
global social and economic impact, and play a significant role in
helping organizations better secure their business
operations," Unisys President and CEO Joseph W. McGrath said

September : European Commission to decide on RFID
These workshops will take place in Brussels between March
and June 2006 and their conclusions will assist the European
Commission in drafting a working document on RFID.
This document will be published in September in an online
consultation. The additional feedback will then be analysed and
integrated in a Commission Communication on RFID, to be adopted
before the end of the year and could lead to amendments of
the Privacy and electronic communications Directive of 2002,
which is up for review this year

Alcatel ( France) actually a takeover of Lucent ( US) -- March
29, 2006
Though the companies have said they are
discussing a "merger of equals," experts say the deal
probably would be treated as an acquisition
of a U.S. company by a foreign entity
because Alcatel of France is one and a half times the size of
Lucent, and the combined company would probably be based in Paris
In recent years, however, Lucent has
given new emphasis to government business, largely as a source of
lucrative and stable military
and intelligence communications
contracts
Lucent executives said its business of
running communications networks for
governments had grown 50 percent in 2005 after doubling in 2004
Some of the work has a decidedly
futuristic focus, like an $11.5 million grant from the Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency [ DARPA
] to develop high-speed wireless networks
that can be quickly assembled to allow troops to communicate with
one another on battlefields

Nasdaq makes $ 4.1 billion
bid for the London Stock Exchange March
23, 2006
( Ed: the one Scrooge traded at
: )
Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. offered to buy London Stock
Exchange Plc for 2.4 billion pounds ($4.1 billion)
to create the first transatlantic stock market.
LSE rejected the bid, the third approach it has spurned in 15
months
The offer gives Nasdaq Chief Executive
Officer Robert Greifeld, 48, a jump on NYSE Group Inc.'s
John Thain, who two days ago said his next step for the New
York Stock Exchange will be international
expansion.
The combination would create a single marketplace
for stocks such as Microsoft Corp. and BP Plc, and may give
foreign companies a way to tap American investors without
having to meet U.S. regulatory requirements.
Thain, 50, said on March 8, after completing the purchase of
Archipelago Holdings Inc. and taking NYSE Group public, that he
wanted to expand in Europe. First, he needs to
finish integrating the New York Stock Exchange and Archipelago
and complete the rollout of the Big Board's hybrid trading system
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is prepared to
discuss how best to oversee a combined exchange
in the event of a transatlantic merger, SEC
Commissioner Paul Atkins said in an interview on Feb. 1. Under
Nasdaq's proposal, the LSE would have a separate board of
directors and remain under the regulatory oversight of the
England's Financial Services Authority.

Feb. 16, 2006
The subcommittee's chairman, [ Christopher]
Smith, plans to introduce legislation by the
end of the week that would restrict an Internet company's ability
to censor or filter basic political or religious terms - even if
that puts the company at odds with local laws in the countries
where it operates. Smith's legislation, called
the Global Online Freedom Act,
would render much of what the Internet companies are currently
doing in China illegal.
Separately, the U.S. State Department announced Tuesday the
formation of a
Global Internet Freedom Task Force,
charged with examining efforts by foreign governments "to
restrict access to political content and the impact of such
censorship efforts on U.S. companies

Create an e-annoyance, go to jail -- Jan 5, 2006 ( Arlen Specter
)
It's no joke. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting
annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without
disclosing your true identity. Criminal penalties include stiff
fines and two years in prison. "The use of the
word 'annoy' is particularly problematic," says Marv
Johnson, legislative counsel for the
American Civil Liberties Union. "What's
annoying to one person may not be annoying to someone else."
