Mayor Daley on Thursday unveiled plans to bolster school security
by linking 4,500 school cameras to police
districts, squad cars and the 911 emergency center.
Chicago's existing surveillance network includes more
than 10,000 public and private cameras. Adding school
cameras will boost that number by 45 percent,

creating an integrated camera network
that Police Supt. Jody Weis said has "evolved into a
national model."
The $418,000 upgrade is being financed by federal Department
of Homeland Security funds. It follows the shooting at

AT&T envisions the
system being used to track in-school assets like computers,
projectors, laptop computers, and lab equipment. But the company
is also pitching the technology as a means to track
students and people directly, enforcing
attendance and tracking visitors on school grounds (including
alerting administrators to people in
unauthorized areas). The system is designed to tie in with existing 802.11 Wi-Fi wireless
networking solutions and display

Curiously, nowhere in AT&T's description of
the technology does the company mention the privacy rights of
students, or any ability for students or parents to

Children age 11 and up to be fingerprinted -- March 4, 2007
CHILDREN aged 11 to 16 are to have their fingerprints taken and
stored on a secret database, internal Whitehall documents reveal.
The leaked Home Office plans show that the mass fingerprinting
will start in 2010, with a batch of 295,000 youngsters who apply
for passports.
The Home Office expects 545,000 children aged 11 and over to have
their prints taken in 2011, with the figure settling at an annual
495,000 from 2014. Their fingerprints will be held on a database
also used by the Immigration and Nationality Directorate to store
the fingerprints of hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers.
David Davis, the shadow home secretary, said: “This borders
on the sinister and it shows the government is trying to end the
presumption of innocence. With the fingerprinting of all our
children, this government is clearly determined to enforce major
changes in the relationship between the citizen and the state in
a way never seen before.”
The leaked plans envisage 90 new enrolment centres for the
ID card scheme on top of the existing network of passport
offices.

An international human rights group has announced
that Melissa Busekros, the 15-year-old German homeschool student
taken by a SWAT team from her home and ordered into a psychiatric
ward by a judge, for the first time in nearly a month will be
able to meet with her parents
They warned that "what

tomorrow." The group is tracking the
circumstances of about 40 families in Germany with court cases in
various stages
Thornton told WND in a telephone interview from
Germany that he is working with the family and their counsel in
an attempt to resolve the abduction of the girl by a
SWAT team of 15 officers from in front of her shocked family.

The Home Office is under fire for allowing foreign agencies
access to the National DNA Database (NDNAD).
Following the news two weeks ago that the ID card database will
be shared, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokeswoman Lynne
Featherstone asked in parliament whether foreign law enforcement
can already access DNA data. Home Office minister Joan Ryan
confirmed that since 2004 they had received 519 requests for UK DNA data from abroad.
No records are available from before that time, she added.
Carrying the profiles of around 3.5m people, including
more than half a million children under 16, it is the world's
largest law enforcement DNA database.

this huge database which leaves it open for misuse - and now we

UTCC is the first university in Thailand to use smart card
technology for both campus administration and payments. Other
uses of the card are for course registration, library services,

The Department’s vision for improvements are
"integrated physical security
systems," which would include
"non-obtrusive sensors" to
detect drugs and weapons, as well as to track students, staff,
visitors, and intruders on school grounds. It also asks
applicants to develop systems that enable law
enforcement personnel to track the time and place
that students enter and exit school buses.
In one of the more controversial areas of the
grant solicitation, the NIJ states that "non-cooperative"
identification and tracking is preferred over a
"cooperative" system. A non-cooperative
identification system captures and tracks personal or biometric
data automatically, without a person knowing that they have been
screened by a surveillance system
"They're going for prisons, they're going
for the schools; they're going for the military; they're
going for the people who are not in a position to say
‘no’," Albrecht told The
NewStandard. "And who is less in a position
to say ‘no’ than a child? I think it's
absolutely unconscionable, absolutely unethical."
If you try to create too much security in a
school setting, you’re going to make it a branch
of the law enforcement enterprise instead of a
branch of the educational enterprise," said Zimring

Dutch to have electronic files from birth -- Sept. 14, 2005
Beginning Jan. 1, 2007, all citizens will be
tracked from cradle to grave in a single database —
including health, education, family and police records — the
health ministry said Tuesday
Every child will get a Citizens Service Number,
making it easier to keep track of children with
problems even when their families move, said Secretary of Health

numbers, dates of birth, addresses, property records, motor
vehicle information and credit history. The
information is collected by states and forwarded to a
database in Florida, where a private company, Seisint Inc., builds and
manages the database.

The so-called "Regulation on Medicinal
Products for Paediatric Use", which could become law by
2006, lays down procedures to encourage pharmaceutical companies
to carry out more research on children's medicine
Another reason why medicine is not normally
tested on children is that it is considered a morally
delicate issue. Fears that a new pharmaceutical
market for children’s medicines may be created has been
expressed by doctors.
"Drugs should never be given to children if there
are any doubts about their benefits, and if there are any
alternatives", said representatives of Critical Psychiatry Network
in a press release from April earlier this year.

MealPay; Parents monitor what kids eat at school -- Aug 2005
In a growing number of states, parents can now
find out what their kids are eating using an electronic payment
system called MealPay.
Kids punch in a personal ID, and parents can go online
to see how much their kids are spending and what they're eating.
For example, parents can add a comment to limit
their children to one bag of chips or allow them none at all.
Experts warn some kids will resent having their diet
on remote control.
